my mourning dove friend

I went bustling out onto the deck this morning to give a little pep talk to my lettuce and spinach seedlings and came face to face with this beauty:

The mourning doves are usually pretty skittish, but this lovely lady (I’m pretty sure she’s a lady, but I could be wrong) let me get within touching distance. Not that I did.

Look at that colouring! Gorgeous.

the next generation of robins

Two robins have been hanging around the backyard all spring, abducting earthworms from the vegetable gardens and giving us the what-for any time we venture close to the opening under the deck. Here’s why.

mama and the ducklings

There are two families of ducks that regularly march through our yard, looping around the gardens, and you’d think it would be easy to grab a photo of a procession like this, but they move fast. I snapped this from the dining room window as they zoomed by in the rain, so please forgive the blurriness.

welcome to the northern flicker appreciation society

What do I love most about northern flickers? Is it the saucy way they have of flashing a fiery look over their shoulder?

Or is it their fabulous spotty vests worn over a tight-fitting black t-shirt?

Maybe it’s the way they sit down to eat.

Or the way they quickly stand to show off when a smaller colleague appears.

It’s impossible to say.

cranky cardinal

I think this look translates to ‘get your own suet, creep’.
